Integrity Magazine – The Catholic teaching on ‘liberty of conscience’ against liberal errors

Editor’s note: The following article is reprinted from The Journal of American Reform. It has been lightly edited for stylistic and editorial standards.

Born in late October of 1833, Tommaso Maria Cardinal Zigliara, O.P., was a member of seven Roman congregations, prefect of the Congregation of Studies, and co-president of the Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. Under the direction of Pope Leo XIII, he was a principal agent for promoting the revival of scholastic philosophy throughout the entire Catholic Church. Cardinal Zigliara died and went to his eternal reward in Rome on May 11, 1893.

What follows is a translated section of Volume III of his manuals on scholastic philosophy. Herein Cardinal Zigliara ably explains and refutes the principles of Liberalism which have now found purchase in nearly every Western country — yet which go undetected even by most self-identifying Catholics.
