American Reform – On the Record: A Response to a Recent Controversy, With Retractions

“Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” — Proverbs XXVII, 17

The Controversy

Over the past 14 days, I have been at the center of a controversy that began when I criticized President George Washington for being a “committed Freemason, indifferentist and Liberal.” This prompted a priest who had been following me for some time, Father Gabriel Lavery, to respond after which I doubled-down and provided additional context. This was in keeping with my analysis earlier this year, featured at The Journal of American Reform:

Along with the eminent Cardinal Pie of Poiters — renowned for his commitment to sound doctrine, which necessarily entails anti-liberalism — I hope Father Lavery can join me in echoing this prelate’s judgment, “The American and Belgian system, that system of philosophical-political indifference, will forever be a bastard system”.1 Of course, this is true despite the fact that tolerating our American system of separation as a lesser evil2 is both a practical necessity and the most expedient way to vindicate the social rights of God and His Church.3
