A child thrives where there are patterns. We get a hint of this when we overhear him saying with a satisfied air, long before he can possibly have built up a storehouse of experiences, and when in fact the thing he is referencing happened at most, twice, “We always go camping in the woods.”>Living in a manner that prioritizes (or defaults to) doing what occurs to you and otherwise maximizing spontaneity creates in children a habit of resistance. It makes life rather a chore. Having to make decisions about things all the time is not a way to get through the day, especially when you are four. If your young’uns are giving you trouble, try more predictability, not less!
