The family is a society and the foundation of society, which is why I go on about being a housewife. >Pope Pius XI carefully taught that while it is an institution given by God (as we read in the first chapters of the book of Genesis), it is not “perfect,” which means it requires other institutions to support it, namely, the larger community or state and the Church (he calls them the two other “societies”). It’s no mistake that his clearest teaching on this subject comes in a document about education; to describe the form the support should take he has to explain all that — no less than a description of how human life is organized.
