Radical Fidelity – Staunch Catholic Lieutenant Colonel Refused Funeral Mass in Cathedral Months After Openly Gay Officer’s Funeral Was Allowed

Tejero during the attempted coup d’état.

The death of Antonio Tejero Molina, the former Spanish Civil Guard lieutenant colonel best known for the dramatic events of February 23, 1981, has reopened not only historical debates but also once again shown that in the Synodal Church there is no place for Catholics. Apparently not even in death.>The controversy erupted after the Archbishop of the Military Ordinariate of Spain, Juan Antonio Aznárez Cobo, refused to permit a funeral Mass for Tejero in the Military Cathedral of Madrid. Cobo is also linked to the heterodox Neocatechumenal Way. The refusal has provoked strong reactions among Catholics, particularly because of the stark contrast with another ceremony held in the same cathedral only months earlier.>According to reports from Spanish Catholic media, the decision has been interpreted by many faithful not merely as a disciplinary choice but as an alarming example of ideological selectivity within the (Synodal) Church’s pastoral practice.
